  2. EMAIL FROM RICH S. To guy who shot video (voice)
    John,
You are wrong. My name is Rich Sprout, I am the "stupid kayaker" The boat is called a surfski, it is not a kayak. I was a lifeguard at the wedge for 5 years, a surfer for 20 years and I am on the USA National Team for Sprint Kayak and surfski.
A surfski is 21' long and weighs 25 # it is made of carbon fiber and is used for riding big ocean swells way out at sea and racing long distances on rough seas. I was not sight seeing nor was I surprised when the set came in. I was hoping to catch one like it. The intervals between the sets were long, as you said about 35 min.
I was getting impatient and paddled closer in riding the rebound chop off the breakwater. The set came and I was pissed that I was out of position. I had no choice but to paddle across the peak like that because the surfski doesn't have such a tight turning radius. I took off hard and then eased off as soon as I figured I was going to make it. It was awesome being so close to it... the next best thing to riding it. Did any of the other body borders that were further inside die? No. So why do you think I nearly died? I was a bit scared, wouldn't you be if you were in my position? You weren't scared because you were the guy on the beach where it is safe, and I was the guy that was that was in the water risking it all.
Now you have the CORRECT story.
    Regards
    Rich Sprout

  3. And John's response...

Thank you Rich for setting the story straight. For the record I was not the one yelling stupid. I was mearlly shooting video of what may have turned out to have been another W disaster. Fortunately that was not the case this time.

Yes, I can imagine how scary that must have been gliding across the face of that beast. For us on the beach we thought that you were done for! We also thought that you were an inexperienced thrill seeker or just an unaware tourist out paddling around. I am relieved to know that you are an experienced waterman and will say so in the video's that I have posted already. I will also post it to the friends here on FB who have already viewed the video in amazement!

Glad your alright and best of luck on the SPRINT USA National Surfski / Kayaking Team!

    John
